March 12th

March 12th

Community Kindergarten

We have continued to learn about nutrition.  The students are so eager to call out which food group their snack belongs to while they eat.  It’s so cute to hear, “Grains!”  “Proteins!”   “Fruits and Vegetables!” or “Sometimes Food!” while they are eating their snack.  We even wrote a letter to “Junk Food Janet” about why she needs to be healthy.  Please ask your child what their advice was.

The children are learning so much about what it means to be healthy.  They have had a lot of fun exploring the gymnastics equipment.  We have heard many comments about how strong they are  and how “easy” it is because they have their own gymnastics lessons.

In Math, we are working with dice.  The children are quick to subitize a dice, but many could use some extra practice with number formation and sequencing.  We will work on this more next week.

French Immersion:

This week in French Immersion we have begun learning the names of different fruits in French and discussing ways of being healthy.  We have also been talking about the Circle of Courage.

In math we have begun sorting numbers from lowest to highest and really practicing writing our numbers in the correct direction.

Fun Socks!

Thanks so much to everyone for sending in a pair of white socks.  A tip was passed onto us about setting the colors; putting some salt in the water for a quick soak BEFORE you put them in the wash is helpful.

Community Kindergarten
This week, we continued our work on nutrition and are learning more about the different food groups. Ask your child what they would include in a “superhero power breakfast.” They should know all about proteins, fruits and vegetables, and grains. In Math, we started our measuring unit. This week we measured our stuffies using non-standard measurements.

We continue our work on printing practice. We are slowly learning how to stretch out our words to recognize all the sounds we hear.

French Immersion:

This week we have worked on the difference between the sound “B” and “P”. We brainstormed words that have those sounds, and listened to see if we could hear them in the beginning, middle and end of certain words.
We are also studying the Circle of Courage. We discussed how we are becoming more and more independent with tasks like zipping our coats, sharpening our pencils and using strategies learned in class to figure out our numbers in French.

Community Kindergarten
We have been learning to identify, build and explain 2-D and 3-D shapes.  Please ask your child if they can tell you about this learning.  Ask them to list the various 2-D and 3-D shapes that they know.

Pink shirt day led to a lot of great conversation.  We also had a lot of fun reading books on kindness with our buddies.  Please check out our pictures!

We have also continued our work on nutrition.  Ms.  Allegro, our student teacher, is doing an excellent job in building excitement and knowledge about healthy eating.  Did you know that the Canada food guide has moved from four food groups to three?  The milk and meat group have been combined into one group called the “Protein group.”

Finally, we have continued on with literacy.  We covered the letter Kk in our printing journal.  Please continue to work with writing with your child at home.  They are becoming much more independent in s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g the words out loud and then writing down the beginning, middle and end sounds that they hear.

French Immersion:
We have learned all about 2D shapes this week. We have also been working on putting shapes together to create pictures and artwork. Can your child tell you all about shapes in French?

We are working on singing our Alphas together to read words we are writing. Can your child identify some French sounds in their Library books this week?

Community Kindergarten

This week, we truly immersed ourselves in the French Canadian culture. We are so lucky to be able to learn about this Canadian celebration and how the French Canadian communities enjoy winter. We started the week by making our very own effigie of Bonhomme. Please keep this memento from Carnaval. Every year they are at Tuscany, your child will be adding to their effigie collection.

On Tuesday, we enjoyed our time building an ice castle and eating delicious maple syrup at Cabane a Sucre. We did some writing to describe how the maple candy tasted. We then finished off the week with two “design thinking” challenges and thought about how we could design our own Bonhomme banner. Ask your child what they designed with their Gingerbread House around Carnaval.

Thank you for all the work you continue to do at home with home reading. We can’t believe how far the students have come in only 2 weeks! A friendly reminder that home reading books must be returned to school on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please ensure you keep the books, fry word list, and log books inside their home reading bags. Thank you!

French Immersion:
This week has been a very busy and exciting week. We learned all about Carnaval and had so much fun building an ice castle and creating a classroom banner for our parade next week. What was your child’s favorite part about Carnaval?
We are asking that every family send in a family photo. This can be multiple photos or just one, whatever is easiest for you. Next week we will be starting our “Family unit” and we are hoping that by the end of this unit all students will be able to talk about their families in French and do a small presentation.

Community Kindergarten

In Math we are exploring the differences between 2-D and 3-D shapes.  The students were very excited to use i-pads to record their findings on a shape hunt.  We have also continued our work with tally marks and subitizing numbers (knowing at a glance without having to count).  In Gym we are participating in “DRUM FIT” and the students have been creative in coming up with their own routines. Our topic of community and families will flow nicely into our week of “Carnaval de Tuscany” where we learn and experience aspects of this special celebration of French culture.

Thank you to everyone for your participation and excitement with our home reading program.  Please remember that the exchange is every Monday and Wednesday.  Thank you also for your practice with the FRY words.  It is amazing how the children are learning them SO quickly!

French Immersion:
This week we have practiced “singing” our Alpha sounds together to create words like “ Le chat” and “La porte”.
We also did a design challenge using ginger bread houses. We had to answer the question "it's not a house it's a________" then we drew a picture of what we wanted to create and recreated it using gingerbread.
In math we continue to work on our early addition skills using number bonds and dominos. This week we have added our challenge centers where we need to find the missing number using one of the strategies being taught in class.
We are so very excited for Carnaval next week!!!!!!

Carnaval de Tuscany Information:

Tuscany School is very excited to be hosting our school’s very first Carnaval de Tuscany this year from February 3 to February 11.  During this week students will be participating in a variety of different activities related to French Canadian culture and our joy for winter.   Throughout the week students are encouraged to wear their toques, flannel shirts, ceinture flechee and jeans, especially for our Kick Off Assembly on Monday, February 3.

Tuesday February 4 | Cabane à sucre and Palais de glace
Students will be participating in Cabane à sucre (sugar snack).  Classes will be scheduled to head outside and participate in making tire d’érable (taffy).

On this day students will also be working together as a whole school to build a palais de glace (ice castle).  For this day, students are asked to bring in 2 - 2L milk or juice cartons (or something similar like an ice cream container, pail or even a dozen ice cubes works) that have been filled with water and frozen to be used as ‘bricks’ for building our palais de glace. Please start freezing your ice blocks now, as it takes a good 5 days to freeze solid.  If possible, it would be helpful for parents to make a cut down the middle of one side of the milk/juice container to make getting the ice bricks out of the containers easier or alternately bring them already with the carton removed.

Friday February 7 | Carnaval Winter Sports Day
