January 30th

January 30th

Community Kindergarten

In Math we are exploring the differences between 2-D and 3-D shapes.  The students were very excited to use i-pads to record their findings on a shape hunt.  We have also continued our work with tally marks and subitizing numbers (knowing at a glance without having to count).  In Gym we are participating in “DRUM FIT” and the students have been creative in coming up with their own routines. Our topic of community and families will flow nicely into our week of “Carnaval de Tuscany” where we learn and experience aspects of this special celebration of French culture.

Thank you to everyone for your participation and excitement with our home reading program.  Please remember that the exchange is every Monday and Wednesday.  Thank you also for your practice with the FRY words.  It is amazing how the children are learning them SO quickly!

French Immersion:
This week we have practiced “singing” our Alpha sounds together to create words like “ Le chat” and “La porte”.
We also did a design challenge using ginger bread houses. We had to answer the question "it's not a house it's a________" then we drew a picture of what we wanted to create and recreated it using gingerbread.
In math we continue to work on our early addition skills using number bonds and dominos. This week we have added our challenge centers where we need to find the missing number using one of the strategies being taught in class.
We are so very excited for Carnaval next week!!!!!!

Carnaval de Tuscany Information:

Tuscany School is very excited to be hosting our school’s very first Carnaval de Tuscany this year from February 3 to February 11.  During this week students will be participating in a variety of different activities related to French Canadian culture and our joy for winter.   Throughout the week students are encouraged to wear their toques, flannel shirts, ceinture flechee and jeans, especially for our Kick Off Assembly on Monday, February 3.

Tuesday February 4 | Cabane à sucre and Palais de glace
Students will be participating in Cabane à sucre (sugar snack).  Classes will be scheduled to head outside and participate in making tire d’érable (taffy).

On this day students will also be working together as a whole school to build a palais de glace (ice castle).  For this day, students are asked to bring in 2 - 2L milk or juice cartons (or something similar like an ice cream container, pail or even a dozen ice cubes works) that have been filled with water and frozen to be used as ‘bricks’ for building our palais de glace. Please start freezing your ice blocks now, as it takes a good 5 days to freeze solid.  If possible, it would be helpful for parents to make a cut down the middle of one side of the milk/juice container to make getting the ice bricks out of the containers easier or alternately bring them already with the carton removed.
